The Upper Wallkill Facilities commenced operation in the spring of 1984. This facility accommodates the wastewater treatment needs of Franklin, Hamburg, and Sussex Boroughs and provides service to portions of Vernon, Hardyston, Wantage and Sparta Townships. The Upper Wallkill Plant is an advanced secondary treatment facility, which has a permitted discharge of 3 million gallons per day (GPD).
Since its inception, 20 years ago, the Upper Wallkill Valley Water Pollution Control Facilities, as it is formally known, has treated and discharged over 7 billion gallons of treated wastewater while consistently meeting all NJPDES Permit requirements. This facility, in addition to accepting wastewater from the communities previously mentioned, treats countywide septic waste (septage) and other Sussex County wastewater treatment plant sludges. Upper Wallkill Facility residuals or "biosolids" are composted which converts the sludge to a soil conditioner and is distributed to area sod farms, golf courses, landscaping contractors and nurseries. This beneficial reuse of biosolids is an environmentally preferable method to incineration.
